Everything has to be perfect….

There’s so much pressure on families these days and, in many ways, holidays are when this pressure is at its greatest. There are just so many details to be taken care of and everything has to be perfect doesn’t it?

But perfect isn’t about arrangements and travel times and where to eat. Perfect is about making memories that will last forever; memories that you can all enjoy when your kids have grown up and are coming back with their kids.

Here in 1066 Country, there are many attractions, events and activities that make for enduring memories.

The Kent & East Sussex Railway is the country’s finest example of a rural light railway. The line gently winds its way from Tenterden-“the Jewel of The Weald” – for ten and a half miles, through unspoilt countryside of the Rother Valley and into the shadow of the magnificent Bodiam Castle which looks like it belongs in a fairytale with its deep moat, drawbridge and perfectly preserved walls. Throughout the year, the National Trust runs some truly incredible events for families at this castle, from dressing up days and battle re-enactments to fully fledged outdoor theatre productions that bring to life some of the most enchanting stories in children’s literature. The trust also hosts similar events at Batemans in Burwash, the former home of Rudyard Kipling, author of The Jungle Book.

If you want the family to enjoy some much needed fresh spring air then look no further than Bedgebury Pinetum where there are various woodland play areas and a family cycle trail. You can even hire bikes. Why not ride or hike the Cuckoo Trail which runs for 13 miles through some of 1066 Country’s most spectacular countryside. There are cycle paths on most of 1066 Country’s beaches, including the award winnng Pelham Beach in Hastings. If you are on foot you should consider the 660 acre (267 hectares) Hastings Country Park which, with its rugged terrain, is the perfect place to go exploring.

Maybe the most memorable place you will visit is the biggest, most jaw-droppingly scenic beach around here, Camber Sands, only a few minutes walk from my holiday cottages at Whitesand.
