Some of the best beaches in southern England, swathes of scenic marshland and miles of coastal walking are right on your doorstep when you stay at Camber Sands. And this outside paradise comes into its own when you’re in the company of your four-legged friend. In fact, we can think of few places so handy for hiking with your dog and with no need to get in the car.
But don’t take our word for it. Read on and discover some exceptional Camber Sands dog walks from the door of our East Sussex holiday cottages. And even better, you can also include a pint and a bite to eat at nearby dog-friendly establishments and make a day out of it.
Beach on your doorstep (literally)
The miles of golden beaches are undoubtedly the main attraction at Camber Sands and the good news is that they are dog friendly. And even better, year-round.
There’s a slight caveat to this because the central section of the beach nearest the amenities is out of bounds to hounds in high season (May to September). But these are Camber Sands and even when it’s high season, your dog still has literally miles of beach to roam around.
Visit off-season and the entire stretch of sands, that’s all five miles of them (yes, five!), is open to you and your dog.

- You can take the sandy route: all the way along the beach to the mouth of the river Rother and then along the river bank into town.
- Or follow the Old Tram Line, which takes in bits of beach and much of the golf course where you’ll also find the old corrugated iron tram station
- Or if your dog likes to run alongside your bike join the National Cycle Network Route 2 at the edge of Whitesands

Gourmet and sustainable dining at The Gallivant

Nature reserve walk on your doorstep (literally)
You can ring the changes with Camber Sands dog walks by hiking to Dungeness Nature Reserve. This wild place has strikingly beautiful scenery and makes a lovely walk. A snack of fish reward
Perched on the headland at Dungeness Beach is the Snack Shack, a perfect spot to reward yourself with a welcome bite to eat after your walk from Camber Sands – and build your energy up for the return. A pint for the parched on the way home
Well, it would be rude not to stop for refreshments at one of Rye’s ancient hostelries on the way back. Wouldn’t it?! The Mermaid Inn has cellars dating back to the 12th century although the core of today’s building was built in the 1420s – it’s hard not to be mesmerised by the conservation of its interiors too.

Great for small families or two couples enjoying a mini break together, Owlers takes its name from the smugglers who plied their trade on the surrounding marsh and nearby medieval town of Rye, “the (former) smuggling capital of England.” Unluckily for the smugglers, there were no modern, exquisitely outfitted beach cottages like this one in the 18th century!
