Book your stay Beside The Sea and discover one of the most magical regions in England to cycle. From flat, quiet, country lanes with church towers dotting the wide-open landscape to stunning coastline and ancient woodlands, there is plenty of choice cycle routes, making this sunny corner of England an ideal place to bring your bike and explore. The vast High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has a unique and varied network of ancient routes and tracks to explore on two wheels.
There are hundreds of cycle-ways allowing you to discover unspoilt beaches or explore the quiet, winding lanes and villages of the beautiful countryside, all at a relaxed pace whether you are a wobbly novice or the experienced cyclist.
For the cycling enthusiast, why not take on the iconic 1066 circular trail with its blockbuster sights. This is the route William the Conqueror would have taken all those years ago (had the bike been invented then!). Linking the coast with the woods and hills of the Weald, the route begins by following the excellent wide promenade westwards along Hastings seafront before a steep climb away from the sea up along the western edge of Hastings. The countryside section of the ride truly starts on delightful Telham Lane. A climb on the B2095 is rewarded with the delights of Battle. Beyond here you are back into woodland, carpeted with bluebells and wild garlic in the spring and verges of wildflowers from spring to autumn. Robertsbridge boasts many fine old buildings. The descent to cross the River Rother gives fabulous views of Bodiam Castle. Ewhurst Green has lovely old oast houses and a curiously-shaped steeple on the church. Keep an eye out for the unusual mullioned windows in the roof and the beautifully carved lych gate at Beckly church. Pass through the coppiced woodland of Beckly Woods then descend to almost sea-level to cross the River Breed. A final long climb allows you to re-enter Hastings from the east, dropping down through the historic Old Town and back to the promenade, phew!
For a flatter, more family-friendly spin, get in the saddle and head to the Romney Marsh with a range of routes from 10 to 42 miles under the big-sky landscapes where you can peddle the quiet lanes of the marsh on the trail of Dr Syn keeping an eye out for smugglers, or experience the delights of the unique marsh wildlife and learn about the local legends. Enjoy the beauty of the picturesque marsh churches, follow the route of William Cobbett on his rural ride, or capture the allure of the openness and solitude of the marsh.
For those of you that don’t fancy yourselves as the next Bradley Wiggins then we would recommend getting in touch with Anthony at E-Bike Hire here in Camber.
E-bikes are regular bicycles with a battery-powered “pedal assist.” When you hop on and push the pedals, a small motor engages and gives you a boost, so you can zip along without the huffing and puffing and take in the sites at a more leisurely pace.
With a wealth of breath-taking landscapes and such fascinating history, there’s plenty for you to discover, ‘on yer bike’.
