The reasons to visit Camber Sands change with the seasons. With temperatures above the national average, the warmer months are a big hit for holiday-makers seeking a sun-filled, beachside getaway. As the temperatures fall later in the year, you can revel in the fresh sea air and have the beach entirely to yourself.
Whatever time of year you arrive, Camber Sands weather transforms the landscape and offers a new way to enjoy your time here. With that in mind, here’s our guide to making the most of every season.
Summer
Come summer, tourists flock to Camber Sands to sprawl on its long and sandy beach. July, August and September have the fewest average number of rainy days, and temperatures range between 14-19°. It’s the perfect time of year for splashing in the sea, lazing in the sunshine, and building sandcastles with the kids.
After a morning beside the shore, head to The Owl for lunch or treat yourself to ice cream at theKit Kat Cafe. For a scenic setting, pack a picnic and enjoy lunch in the grass-topped dunes overlooking the beach. Be sure to sample a punnet of ripe and juicy Kentish cherries and strawberries — a deliciously sweet local treat washed down with some Gusbourne Rose.
Watch the sun slowly fizzle into the sea, then spend the evening sipping drinks at the Gallivant. Just a hop skip and a jump from the dunes, The Gallivant serves up fantastic food that makes the most of the incredible local ingredients, with plenty of outdoor seating to make the most of long summer evenings.
Spring
The crowds thin out and the beach opens up. Visit Camber Sands in spring and you’ll often get to enjoy whole sections of the beach all to yourself. Bringing your pet pooch? They’ll have endless space to bound along the sand. The temperatures at this time of year also remain mild. Highs of 16° in May mean you’ll often have plenty of days for flip flop and t-shirt weather.
The tranquil atmosphere in Spring attracts locals and travellers alike, not least to enjoy walking and cycling in the surrounding countryside. Spot newborn lambs find their wobbly feet as you wander through the lush green meadows of Romney Marsh.
Further afield, the ancient woodlands at Brede (a 25-minute drive away) become covered by a blanket of bluebells. As you walk among extensive areas of pine, spruce, oak and larch, keep your eyes out for woodland inhabitants, including fallow deer, badgers, buzzards, nightingales, and even the occasional wild boar!
Autumn
As the leaves begin to fall, the crowds disappear and Camber Sands’ landscape changes into a kaleidoscope of deepening crimsons, pinks and yellows. Cooler temperatures bring a brisk feel to early morning walks, and you might find an empty expanse of beach stretching out before you.
Stroll down to a deserted shoreline at sunset and watch an endless sky erupt with fiery reds, pinks and golds, then head back to your cottage for board games and drinks beside the fire. Savour the off-season serenity and stomp through the leaves on a muddy woodland walk, take a quiet bike ride through the sleepy countryside, or hop in the car and drive along the coast to historic towns and fishing villages.
A treat for foodies, autumn also sees the ever-popular Wild Boar Week. From the 20th – 28th October, this annual festival in Rye offers opportunities to sample countryside game, including partridge, pheasant, venison and rabbit. Farmers’ markets, childrens’ activities, quiz nights, and live music add to the fun throughout the week.
Winter
The mornings feel fresh and crisp, the sweet scent of wood smoke fills the air, and rolling waves crash against a lonely, windswept shore. In winter, Camber Sands feels magical.
As everyone else slumbers, bundle up for a bracing dawn walk beside the sea. Grab a fish ‘n’ chip lunch and continue your coastal stroll. Or tuck into a full English with a steaming mug of tea at the Globe Inn.
Carry on your trip by wandering Rye’s medieval streets. Explore misty alleys on a winter ghost walk, search for hidden treasures in a local antique shop, then stop for creamy hot chocolates beside a crackling pub fireside. Time your visit to meet real reindeer, ride fairground rides, and get on Santa’s good list at Rye Christmas Festival (held this year on December 8th).
At the end of February, enjoy shucking and sampling locally caught scallops at the Rye Bay Scallop Festival, with cooking classes, tasting events, live music and more throughout the event.
Enjoy the changing seasons
Camber Sands weather brings a unique feel to all four seasons, and a new reason to visit. Soak up the summer warmth on the beach, cycle through the countryside as spring flowers begin to bloom, kick up the autumn leaves on a woodland walk, or revel in winter’s solitude and beauty.
